BATTLING DAVIS DENIED BY BINGHAM (Press Release 21 April 2008)
Steve Davis lost a thrilling match to Stuart Bingham in the 888.com World Snooker Championship - and with it his place among the top 16.
The Nugget will have to qualify for next year’s Crucible showpiece for the first time since 2003, having suffered a 10-8 reverse to fellow Essex cueman, Bingham.
Davis battled back superbly from 8-3 down, but crucially lost a marathon 44 minute 19th frame on the pink, and Bingham added the next to set up a last 16 match with Graeme Dott or Joe Perry.
Provisionally ranked 27th going into the tournament, Davis is now sure to drop out of the elite, though the 50-year-old has vowed to carry on and will relish the challenge of trips to the qualifiers.
It’s not the first time that Bingham has knocked a multiple champion out at Sheffield - in 2000 he beat Stephen Hendry on his Crucible debut.  In fact, that was the last time he won a match at the venue.  This time he was considered favourite for the tie, but he had to work hard to see off the challenge of his veteran opponent.

HIGGINS WEATHERS STEVENS STORM (Press Release 19 April 2008)
John Higgins survived a brief rally from Matthew Stevens to secure his place in the Last 16 of the 888.com World Snooker Championship. 

Higgins could barely have been given a tougher draw to start the defence of his crown, but dealt with the challenge admirably to score a 10-5 sucess.  The wizard of Wishaw goes through to the second round at the Crucible, where he will face Ryan Day. 
Stevens, twice a runner-up here and three more times a semi-finalist since 2000, had never previously lost a first round match at Sheffield.  He threatened to extend his fine Crucible record when he recovered from 7-2 down to 7-5.
The Welshman rattled in breaks of 53 and 58 as he grasped the momentum by winning the first three frames of the evening session.  But World No 1 Higgins showed his class in frame 13, stopping his opponent in his tracks with a run of 75.  And the Scot closed out the match brilliantly with further breaks of 120 and 103.
Higgins is aiming to become the first player to retain the title since Stephen Hendry in 1996.  He is yet to reach a ranking semi-final this season, but on today’s evidence, may have found his form at the perfect time, just as he did a year ago.
Stevens’ hopes of regaining a place among the official top 16 for next season now look slim - he must hope for a series of other results to go his way.

ROBERTSON STEAMS AHEAD (Press Release 19 April)
Neil Robertson got his 888.com World Championship campaign off to a flying start agains Nigel Bond at the Crucible.
The Australian looks to be running into form at the right time as he leads 7/2 at the end of the first session.  The World No 7 raced into a 2-0 lead with runs of 59 and 70.  The players then fought out the longest frame of the match so far at just under 46 minutes, but it was Robertson who again prevailed.
Bond, a runner-up to Stephen Hendry in 1995, was on the scoreboard in the last frame before the interval after a re-rack.
Robertson, who narrowly lost 13-12 to Graeme Dott here in 2006 and 13-10 to Ronnie O’Sullivan last year, soon re-established his buffer with breaks of 70 and 80 to lead by four frames.
Bond replied in terrific style with a 125 to reduce his arrears to 5-2.  But Robertson, a winner of two ranking titles last season, claimed the last two frames of the session to hold a healthy advantage when this match plays to a conclusion tomorrow morning.  The first to ten will claim a place in the Last 16.
