This year saw the largest number of entries (16) for a number of years and also as far as I can recall, the first time we have ever had a lady in the field!
Last year’s winner, Bernie Steward, and five times winner Ron Milicich, ended up in the same section and Ron easily beat Bernie in their match 2/0 with a number of good breaks and snookers in the game.
Unfortunately we had a late withdrawal from section four. In that section Greg Crichton beat Graham Backman 2/0 to win the section. The game between Ken Joyce and Charlie Lagor saw Ken get a beautiful 25 clearance to equal at 1-all. (The clearance was probably as good as Ken used to do 25 years ago). However Charlie won the third frame to take the match. Cliff Keach potted some great balls to beat Ron 2/0 and cause a three way play-off. Ron drew the bye in the play-off and played Cliff for second place. So after beating both Ron and Bernie, Cliff missed out qualifying for post-section play.
Section 3 was wide open until the last match and Roy Clark had to beat Danny Estocapio (who was unbeaten) to avoid being in a three way tie with John Rehman and Geoff Makapa. Roy won 2/1 and won the section.
The last match of the day was an Onehunga Workingmen’s Club Final between Greg Crichton and Charlie Lagor. It was always going to be a fast final and Charlie won 2/0.
The plate final was won by Cliff Keach over Diane Clark 2/0.

Final: C Lagor bt G Crichton 2/0.
