This tournament was sponsored by the Royal Oak Entertainment Centre 2004. The event attracted 35 playres and with only six tables at the OWMC, two sections were played at the ACBS Clubrooms.
This tournament had some very strange happenings with one player deliberately losing a frame so he could play three frames and then missed out on qualifying, another player didn’t play his last match and Gordon Dong (Genie) didn’t front up because he thought the tournament was being played on the following weekend.
In section play Regan Williams was struggling to find his form and failed to quality. Other surprise non-qualifiers were Vanny Ry and Vinny Gounder.
In post-section play Eldon Lai and Charlie Lagor had a long match with the first two frames taking one hour and twenty-five mnutes! Lagor won the final frame to take the match 2/1. Clive Thomson won his first two post-section games disposing of Gordon Jakeman and Tony Van Wijk 2/0 each and at that stage of the tournament had not dropped a frame. Paul Bason played Steve Robertson in one semi-final and was unlucky in the first frame, potted the blue to win but the white rolled on for a bit and went in off, then he potted the black to win and also went in off. Steve won the next frame to take the match.
In the other semi-final THomson beat Lee Rudolph 2/1. Rudolph had good wins over Wayne Belmont 2/0 and then Charlie Lagor 2/1 to reach the finals.
The final between Robertson and Thomson was a great match. Thomson won the first two frames, Robertson the next two. In the fifth Robertson started out with a 40 break. Thomson replied with a 52, missing an easy black to seal the frame and the highest tournament break. He also missed the green off the spot to seal the match. Robertson potted green, brown and blue then missed a relatively easy pink which Thomson potted to win the tournament.
Sanjay Kumar won the plate event 2/0 over Vanny Ry.
