This was the last ranking tournament for the year for the ABSA, and the last ranking tournament for our players going to the World Champs in Syria, early December. There were some very talented youngsters in this tournament thanks to Wayne Belmont’s coaching efforts with the six players in the field that he’s been training; the youngest at only 11 years old

With two players not turning up, this left a field of 18 players, 16 of which qualified for post-section play. There were four first-timers to tournament play and three of those qualified for the next round and they all performed well, with Josh Tate beating Cliff Keach 2/0, Taniela Filipo lost to Faz Powell 2/1 and Magnosh Pagdiwalla beat Louis Chand 2/0. This was the largest field we’ve had event for a number of years, with 43 men and 13 women. This did mean that there were quite a few sections with different numbers of players in them which also meant a lot of calculation had to be done because there were 32 qualifiers in the men’s section and 8 in the women’s.
