Report by Malcolm Beehre : Not many surprises in the qualifiers for Post-section play. This was a very strong field and there were some very tight matches.
One surprise was Lee Rudolph not qualifying but with Barry Moorer who hasn’t played in a ranking tournament in the last few years, he came in as fourth seed in that section as an unranked player and won the section. Also in Moore’s section was Paul Bason and Ramona Belmont; Belmont was second and Bason third on two wins and a +1 frame differential making him 13th seed for Post-section play. Bason was a different player in Post-section play disposing of Eldon Lai 3/0 in 45 minutes, with Lai never really getting a chance to settle down. Bason lost his next match to Sanjay Kumar 3/2 and with both players playing fast and furiously, referee Nita Clarkson said it was a harrowing game to oversee.
Clive Thomson seemed to be cruising along having not dropped a frame in Section play. He beat Bernie Stewart 3/0, then Sani Roberts 3/0 to move into a Semi-final match again Sanjay Kumar. Thomson had a good lead in the first frame, but Kumar got a 35 clearance to win on the black. Thomson won the second frame, Kumar the fourth and then played a very tight fourth frame to win 3/1.
Vanny Ry was potting well once again, winning his section and managing an 82 break on the way, and then in his Semi-final match again Regan Williams had another 82 break winning the match 3/0.
The Final was between Vanny Ry and Sanjay Kumar. The first frame was very open and could have gone to either player, but it was Kumar who poted brown, blue, pink to be 1-nil up. Ry started with a 32 break in the second frame, Kumar replied with a 21, 23 and eventually 22 to lead 2/0. Ry started strongly again with breaks of 30 and 15. Kumar got 16 but Ry potted some incredible long shots to take the third frame. The fourth frame was a pretty scrappy one until Kumar cleared up to win 3/1.
The Plate event was won by Gordon Jakeman over Dennis Yin 2/1
The Flyte event was won by Wyn Belmont over Eldon Lai 2/1.
Highest Break of the tournament was by Ramona Belmont with an 84 clearance. Vanny Ry had two 82 breaks and both times missed an easy red.
There was a nice crowd of about 20 people watching both days which is always pleasing to see.
