NZBSA Open C-Grade Snooker

March 23rd, 2010

Held at the ACBS Clubrooms : 27-28 February 2010

Report by Wyn Belmont: This tournament was introduced to encourage participation of our junior snooker players, new players and all players who are either C-grade players or B-grade players (who haven’t won B-grade Open tournaments or National B-Grade tournaments, or higher).

The turnout was great with 11 players in the field from West Auckland.  Supporters were present as well.  Three players entered from Waikato, and Ron Burd and Malcolm Barton also refereed the Final.

The Plate section was won by 12-year-old Louis Chand over Rixon Korewha (13 years).  The frame score 2/1.

The results of the Main Draw are below.  Lee Paul (17 years) proved victorious over Roy Clark 2/0.  Lee is the Under 17 years, Under 19 years and Under 21 years Junior Champion holder from last year.

The venue proved to be quite warm (after all this is summer).  Air conditioning units will be wired up from early next week making the venue more cooler to play in.  The tables were great.  The ACBS completed the draw sheets and results sheets, etc.  A trophy was supplied by the ACBS for the Annual Open C-Grade Championship.

The tournament was enjoyed by all competitors and it is hoped that the tournament will grow and numbers will be bigger in the future.  Our aim is to get more people back on the table playing our sports – there is no limit to the numbers.  If need be, we will use other clubs to run sections in order to cater for the field.  Quite often we limit the fields which can be detrimental to the sport itself.

We are in a competitive environment with other sports and leisure activities, a recession, non-smoking in venues, drink drive, the costs of travel, costs of accommodation, etc.  If we make the tournaments more attractive with prize money and other benefits then this will lead to better numbers at our events (we hope).

Overall the tournament was successful and enjoyed by all.  Players were advised of the NZ Handicap Snooker Tournament to be held in June 2010, and that we will be having an awards evening during the Nationals in July.  The tentative date for this will be 10 July 2010 (TBC).
