Held at the ACBS Clubrooms : 29 May 2010

Report by Malcolm Beehre : This tournament was a trial at using a random draw and only first match losers going through to the other side of the draw, with the winner from that side playing the winner from the last two-lifer in the Final.

This system did create some unforeseen circumstances and at the end of the day it would probably work better under a two-life system, where the Semi-finalisdt in the two life side did not have two lives – i.e. they would end up as third on the tournament prize list and fourth place holder would be the losing Semi-finalist on the one-life side.

One drawback in this tournament was players wanting to lose on purpose because of thinking that they had a better chance to get into the prize money by being on the one-life side of the draw.  After some discussion with some of the playres it was decided that the 10-ball tournament would be “Two-Life” down to the Semi-finals, but Quarter-final games through to the Final of the one-life side would be a race to four frames.

The smallest and youngest player in the field, Geejay Tamehana had Molrudee Vujanic in all sorts of trouble in their match.  Only four foot high he just seemed to pot balls from anywhere but also knew when to play safety as well.  He was 2-nil up and Vujanic had to pull out all the stops to win 5/3.

Semi-finalists were Matt Edwards playing Rongo Peipi, and Kelly Paul playing Vujanic.  Edwards easily beat Peipi 5/1, but Peipi is another small junior player who played really well all day to end up as one of the last two-lifers.  Vujanic missed too many easy chances in the Final, giving Edwards an easy 6/1 win.
