APA Regional 9-Ball Championships
July 30th, 2008
Held at the ACBS Clubrooms : 26-27 July 2008
Malcom Beehre writes : “This year only attracted a small field of 15 players. It should have been 16, but unfortunately one player paid his entry and marked if off on the form, but failed to put his name and address on it, so we had no idea who it was and had to leave him out when the draw was done!
Also at our last committee meeting it was voted that entries will no longer close one month before the tournament - they will close approximately two weeks before, except for National Events, so please be aware of that. It was decided at the last meeting to hold a plate event if it was practical, depending on number.
Rod Mitchell was unlucky not to qualify in section play. He and Jamie Walker were both on the same number of match wins and same differntial to decide fourth place in their section and Jamie went through as he beat Rod in their match. In the same section Jon Grimley and Sean Stevenson were also tied on matches won and frame differential and as Sean had beaten Jon, he ended up section winner.
Aaron Shaw had a bad day only winning two matches which was a surprise after his form earlier in the year. Cliff Keach had some very close games which could have gone either way and even though he only had two wins, his differential was only -2. This raises a very strange and interesting statistic. After 7 matches, one of which was a plate match and only two of those matches were wins, after 87 frames Cliff ended up with a differential of only -3!
Post Section play nearly saw the upset of the year - Jamie Walker, after sneaking through Section Play as a fourth qualifier, had Jimmy Henry down 6-3 in their race to 8 frame match and Jimmy had to pull out all stops eventually winning 8-7.
Gordon Dong also had a close Post Section match beating Will Wen 8-7. In the other matches Sean Stevenson beat Marvin Padrigo 8-4 and Jon Grimley beat Robert Berridge 8-3.
Because of the way the Post Section draw is compiled, once again the winner and the runner-up from the same section met before the final. Gordon Dong beat Jimmy Henry 9-6 with some very hard, aggressive potting, using his snooker cue, and Sean beat Jon 9-5.
The Final was an all out potting match. Sean Stevenson shot out to a 3-1 lead. It took until the 14th frame for Gordon Dong to close the gap to one frame, but Sean went on to win 10-7. Sean’s comment on receiving his prize - “Now my name is up there with all the sharks like Jimmy Henry and Glen Coutts!”
In the Plate Final Carlos Zaragoza beat David Breen 5-4.
