Some of the lower ranked players won some good frames against the top ranked in the field. Notably Cliff Keach, Roy O’Connor and Paul Olssen, who all took a frame from their top seeds.
Section Play finished nice and early on Saturday due to a number of 2/0 matches. For the second time this year there was a one-frame play-off needed to determine the 16th place qualifier. Ramona Belmont won this over John Williams.
In the first round of Post Section Play there was a major upset caused by Pat Lynch, beating Wyn Belmont 3/1, and another with Tony Van Wijk beating Paul Bason 3/0 - including a 79 clearance from Tony.
Greg Moreton was once again almost the giant killer of the tournament - at 2 all with Henry Killian. Henry potted the last two reds with small colours and cleared the colours to win on the black, putting him through to the Final. The giant killer of this tournament was Tony Van Wijk who beat Paul Bason, Eldon Lai and Clive Thomson to go on to meet Henry in the Final.
An interesting statistic from this tournament is that three of the four semi-finalists were from the same section. Also, until the Final, the two finalists both held the highest breaks of the tournament. Tony with his 79 clearnace and Henry with an 87, with one red still on the table. Henry, however, was too strong in the Final, winning 3/0 in one hour.
The longest match in the tournament was between Edlon Lai and Daniel Sinclair. Eldon won 3/2 after 3 hours and 35 minutes. The Flyte Event was won by Steve Robertson and the Plate Event was won by Joh Williams.
