Captains please remember to check your Captain’s Folders for the format for each round as it differs according to which game you are playing. The results between Creme de la Femme and Sharpshooters have had a frame added to each match because they followed the format of the 8-ball round. Mandie will be checking all team lists and latest memberships to ensure that you have all paid your fees for this year and will be sending out updated lists to your shortly.

Tournament Reports by Malcolm Beehre : The field in the Men’s Championship was extremely strong and with four top Australian players included, it meant for some top NZ players missing out qualifying for Post Section Play. Some of the more noticeable ones to miss out were the 2010 and 2011 NZ 8-Ball Champion Will Wen, plus Brent Wells and Steven Liu.

Two players went through unbeaten in Section Play with NZ 10-Ball Champion, Adam Marlow, going through #1 seed and David Rothall from Australia qualifying in the number two spot.

There was one default in Post Section play and was from a player who has qualified in the two previous tournaments to this event, and who failed to arrive or get there on time for Post Section play for the three tournaments. With the calibre of players in the Post Section draw there was a surprising number of one-sided games and up to the Semi-finals there was only one match that went the full distance.

In the Last Sixteen, Adam Marlow beat Ross Bennett 6/0, Nick Pera beat 82-year-old Tom Parish from Australia 6/0. Parish had beaten Pera in Section Play 5/1. Matt Edwards won by default over Ryan Wang, Kevin Zhang beat Matt Edwards 6/5, Jimmy Henry beat Brad Richmond (AUS) 6/4, Jon Grimley beat Louis Condo (AUS) 6/3 and Rothall beat Jamie Walker 6/1.

In the Quarter-finals, matches were fairly one-sided again with Pera beating Marlow 6/3, Worts beat Edwards6/3, Zhang beat Henry 6/3 and Rothall beat Grimley 6/0. The Semi-finals saw Zhang take out Rothall 7/4 and Pera took Worts 7/4. The Final was won by Pera beating Zhang 7/4.

Men’s Quarter-finals : N Pera bt A Marlow 6/3, C Worts bt M Edwards 6/3, K Zhang bt J Henry 6/3, D Rothall btJ Grimley 6/0.

Men’s Semi-finals : N Pera bt C Worts 7/4, K Zhang bt D Rothall 7/4.

Men’s Final : N Pera bt K Zhang 7/4.

There were some close matches in the Women’s Championship event in Section Play with four out of each section of five qualifying for Post Section Play. Denise Wilkinson top qualified with four wins and a +13 aggregate. Lorna Frost qualified second with four wins and a +9 aggregate. Wilkinson and Frost both won their Quarter-final matches 5/0 over Cherie Hobbs and Michelle Hansen (AUS) respectively. Molrudee Kasemchaiyanan beat Gaylene Bullmore 5/2 and Hazel Cook beat Kim Cullen 5/3. In the Semi-finals Wilkinson beat Kasemchaiyanan 6/2; Wilkinson had only dropped five frames at this stage of the tournament, and Cook beat Frost 6/5. Cook shot out to a 3-nil lead in the Final but missed a couple of chances after that and Wilkinson won the next six frames to win 6/3.

The four qualifiers for Post-section were : (1) Lisa Everett who was actually the lowest ranked player in the event, but who won all of her matches; (2) Molrudee Vujanic; (3) Lorna Frost and (4) Johanna Guest. Vujanic beat Frost in the Semi-finals 4/0 and in the other Semi-final Everett beat Guest 4/2. In the Final between Vujanic and Everett, Vujanic was too strong in defending her title and won 5/0.

In the Men’s Regional event it was great to see a lot of new players and the return of a couple of players who haven’t played tournaments for a number of years. Aaron Gantly was one of those, and qualified fourth in his section, but met number 1 qualifier Jimmy Henry in the first round of Post-section play, going down 5/1. Henry had seven wins in section play with a +17 differential.

Two others who we don’t see very often, Jono Mahan and Andrew Bosman also qualified 13th and 8th respectively.

No real major surprises in the sixteen qualifiers. However, in Post-section play Gordon Dong beat Henry 5/4 after a marathon 1.5 hour match with both players deciding to play soft breaks and have a lengthy safety battle at the start of each frame. Leighton Pologa was on fire playing Tim Putu, winning 5/0.

In the Semi-finals Matt Edwards played Pologa and put out the fire, winning 6/1. In the other Semi-final Dong played Jon Grimley. Dong was 4/1 up and played a bad tactical shot on his last ball and Grimley managed to win that frame to make it 4/2. Dong never really recovered from that error. In the 9th frame on 4-all he had two in-offs and Grimley won the 10th after missing an easy black, but leaving Dong’s last ball safe. Dong went in-off again; Grimley winning 6/4.

The Final between Grimley and Edwards was a bit one-sided with Edwards taking the title 7/3.

Men’s Last Sixteen : J Henry bt A Gantley 5/1, G Dong bt A Bosman 5/3, J Grimley bt S Liu 5/1, K Zhang bt J Mahan 5/2, M Edwards bt C Bowman 5/0, G Coutts bt R Wang 5/2, L Pologa bt W Wen 5/4, T Putu bt H Grace 5/4.
Men’s Quarter-finals : G Dong bt J Henry 5/4, J Grimley bt K Zhang 5/3, M Edwards bt G Coutts 5/3, L Pologa bt T Putu 5/0.
Men’s Semi-finals : J Grimley bt G Dong 6/4, M Edwards bt L Pologa 6/1.
Men’s Final : M Edwards bt J Grimley 7/3.

Women’s Semi-finals : L Everett bt J Guest 4/2, M Vujanic bt L Frost 4/0.
Women’s Final : M Vujanic bt L Everett 5/0.

Held at the ACBS Clubrooms : 13 February 2011

Report by Malcolm Beehre : Good to see a few new faces at the start of the year. There were three women in the field who all played well, but failed to qualify for Post-section. We definitely could do with some more female players so that we may be able to have a section for the women in next year’s B-Grade.

Vinnie Adams qualified top with 7 wins and a +16 aggregate. Maher Hatab and Reece Adams qualified second and third respectively with 6 wins each.

It was an excellent Final with the only junior in the field, Reece Adams, winning over Ning Yang, who certainly played well, only going down 4/3.

There was some talk about the 2011 League, rumour has it there may be an all female team. There are two or three sponsors available from our own members who are in a position to sponsor a team and pay the $200 Team Registration Fee. These teams would use the ACBS Clubrooms as their home venue.

Quarter-finals: C Cao bt V Adams 3/2, N Yang bt R Bennett 3/2, R Adams bt J Walker 3/0, R Lim bt M Hatab 3/1.

Semi-finals : N Yang bt C Cao 3/1, R Adams bt R Lim 3/1.

Final : R Adams b N Yang 3/1.

Held at the ACBS Clubrooms : 12 December 2010

Report by Malcolm Beehre :
The last tournament of the year. It’s amazing how, when players play in a pairs tournament they think they need to discuss shots that don’t need discussing, all on the pretext that they somehow need to play for their partner instead of playing their own game. A simple way to get out of this train of thought is to imagine you are playing a game of singles with the player following you. A couple of very long matches threw the timetable out. Both went to five frames, taking one hour and ten minutes, and one hour respectively.

There were six very competitive teams playing round robin with all qualifying for post-section play. The two top qualifiers got a bye into the semi-finals, with the other four pairs playing for a semi-final spot.

Top qualifiers were Steven Liu and Kevin Zhang, second were Marvin Padrigo and Richard Alfonso. Will Wen and Ryan Wang beat Ning Yang and David Han to meet Padrigo/Alfonso in the semi-finals. Last year’s runners-up Molrudee and Ivica Vujanic beat Aaron Shaw and Lucinda Prescott, gong on to meet Li/Zhang in the other semi-final.

Wen/Wang won their semi-final match 3/1 and the 2010 8-Ball Pairs champions were the Liu/Zhang combination, winning 4/1.

Quarter-finals : M Vujanic/I Vujanic bt A Shaw/L Prescott 3/1, W Wen/R Wang bt N Yang/D Han 3/0.

Semi-finals : S Liu/K Zhang bt Vujanic/Vujanic 3/1, Wen/Wang bt M Padrigo/R Alfonso 3/0.

Final : Liu/Zhang bt Wen/Wang 4/1.

Held at the ACBS Clubrooms : 12-13 June 2010

Report by Malcolm Beehre : Both days started the same way, with a lot of 6/0 wins to the number 1 and 2 seeds in each Section.

Probably the one major upset in the first games was number 6 seed, Kevin Zhang, beating Jon Grimley 6/1. Zhang is a top player but hasn’t played in any 8-ball ranking tournaments and so ended up number 6 in his Section. Unfortunately Grimley’s day didn’t improve and he ended up with only two wins and not qualifying for Post-section play.

Most of the other sections went to the order of seeding. The standard of play from the top seeds was high and five playrs had five wins each with last year’s winner, Adam Marlow, being number 1 qualifier on a +29 differential.

Post-section play : There wre some very close contests in a lot of Post-section matches but also a few one-sided ones. One of them being the match between Leighton Pologa and Jordan Davey, with Pologa beating Davey 6/0. Pologa then lost to the eventual winner, Will Wen in the Quarter-finals 7/6. Marvin Padrigo had Adam Marlow beaten 7/5 but missed an easy black allowing Marlow another chance. Marlow took full advantage and won 7/6. The other finalist, Phil Wilkinson won his Post-section generally by a two or three frame difference and the Final went right to the wire with Wen winning 8/7 but not before losing a couple of frames on technicalities, through not knowing the rules properly.

The Women’s Championship went almost to the book, with Denise Wilkinson cruising through to the Final, only dropping three frames in Section play and none in her Post-section games. However, number two qualifier, Lorna Frost had twoi hard Post-section games, winning both 5/4 then 6/4. Frost had her hand on the trophy looking loke winning 6/2 at one stage, but a couple of mistakes cost her, and Wilkinson won 6/5.

Many thanks to all those who stayed to watch the Finals. Also thankgs to all the sponsors and new blood on the APA Committee for helping us get the biggest field in the Men’s draw for a number of years.

Men’s Last 32 : A Marlow bt N Whelan 6/3, J Cook bt P Hutchings 6/3, M Padrigo bt N Wilkinson 6/4, R Bennett bt P Li 6/0, N Yang bt S Chin 6/4, L Pologa bt J Davey 6/0, T Putu bt W Pera 6/5, W Wen bt S Qi 6/0, P Wilkinson bt J Pera 6/3, K Zhang bt J Walker 6/2, J Pologa bt G Croudis 6/3, S Liu bt C Ming Yang 6/0, N Pera bt C Keach 6/2, M Edwards bt J Henry 6/2, H Grace bt M Hatab 6/4, G Coutts bt D Breen 6/1.
