Malcolm Beehre : Disappointingly, two players withdrew the night before the tournament which makes the tournament a lot harder to run, when there are odd numbered sections. Also disappointingly, 1ZB failed to contact me on the morning of the tournament to discuss the event and also allow me to promote the fact that the NZ Snooker Champs will be held in our Clubrooms in July.

Five pairs played Section Play for the shield donated by Ken Joyce in 1972. On paper the favourites looked like being Clive Thomson and Roy Clark, but despite Thomson having breaks of 50, 45 and six other breaks over 25, they only managed to win one match, and so failed to qualify for the final. O’Kane lost the final match of the World Snooker Masters Championship against Welshman Darren Morgan, by a whopping 6/0 in Hyderbad, India. Had O’Kane won this match he would have been the first in history to hold the title four times.
