Section play was a one-frame round robin, and one-frame snooker always produces some surprises. Because scores were not kept and qualifying was based on wins, there were two secitons that required play-offs to see who qualified and they were both different situations.

With a field of eight, two sections of four played a one-frame round robin to determine the eight placings based on performance for Post-Section play.

A very strong field for this event with the current NZ Champion, Chris Maltby, Henry Killian, Clive Thomson, current North Island Champion, Mark Hannah and defending champion Regan Willians, plus three-times winner of the NZ Snooker Championship, Steve Robertson.

This tournament was sponsored by the Royal Oak Entertainment Centre 2004. The event attracted 35 playres and with only six tables at the OWMC, two sections were played at the ACBS Clubrooms.

This event attracted a very strong field, as it was a World Championship Qualifying event. The World Snooker Championship is being held in India in November 2009.
