North Island Snooker Championship Report

September 24th, 2007

Held at the ACBS Clubrooms : 21-23 September 2007

Submitted by Warren Burke

Waikato’s Steve Robertson won his third North Island Snooker title with a hard-fought 4/1 win over Auckland’s Henry Killian at the Auckland Confederation of Billiard Sports Clubrooms in Royal Oak on Sunday.

For Robertson it has been a long time between drinks as his last title was way back in 1996.  On his way through to the final Robertson defeated Clive Thomson (AK) 3/1, Paul Bason (AK) 3/1 and Wyn Belmont (AK) 3/0 while Killian disposed of Regan Williams (HB) 3/0, Ramona Belmont (AK) 3/0 and then top seed Alastair Davidson (BOP) 3/1, before coming unstuck against Robertson.

It was a quality field that included past New Zealand Snooker Championships Robertson and Wyn Belmont, current NZ Under 21 Champion David Meier-Bailey and 2007 Oceania Women’s Snooker Champion Ramona Belmont.  Both Ramona and David, plus Hawkes Bay representative Ryan Knott were just back from representing New Zealand at the IBSF World Under 21 Snooker Championships in Goa, India, where Ramona clinched third place in the Women’s Under 21 Championship and David reached the Last 32 in the Men’s Championships.

Section play took place on Friday and Saturday with the knock-out rounds on Sunday.
