NZPA Men’s 8-Ball Championship
Having three top players who had not played 8-Ball in the last two years, made for some interesting sections. The number six seeds were Chris McBreen, Rob Tipa and Brent Wells, all who ending up winning their sections. With three defections after the draw was done, this created problems in determining the post section draw and when players enter a three day event they should make sure they have arranged to have time off work for Friday play, and possibly ask the organising Association if their section could be played on the Saturday!
Post Section produced some close matches and also some not too close suprises! Nick Pelling played well and made his first National semi-final, but Ceri Worts was too strong winning the match 6/2. Jimmy Henry did miss some easy shots in his semi-final match against Brent Wells, but ended up winning their match 6/2.
The Final see-sawed all the way to 6-6, no player being more than one frame in front. Ceri entertained the spectators with some novel ways of getting out of snookers and potting the ball. In the final frame Ceri broke and cleared to win 7/6.

NZ Women’s 8-Ball Championship
With eighteen entries the only draw possible was to have two sections of 9 players, meaning that only eight were going to qualify for Post Section play. There were some comments made to Tournament Control about this and it is probably something the NZPA Executive need to look into as there are various options that could be tried to allow for more qualifiers.
In the Semi Finals both matches went the distance resulting in a final match between Lorna Frost and Denise Wilkinson. Both players are no strangers to finals and the title was taken this time by Denise, winning 6/2.
Women’s Quarter-Finals:
J Cook bt R Belmont 4/3, D Wilkinson bt L Nenewale 4/0, L Frost bt M Tinkler 4/2, H Cook bt R Nahu 4/2.
Women’s Semi-Finals:
D Wilkinson bt J Cook 5/4, L Frost bt H Cook.
Women’s Final:
D Wilkinson bt L Frost 6/2.
