Barton McGill Open Snooker – Big Thanks to Barton McGill Limited for sponsoring this event
A tournament full of suprises including a couple of junior players starting to make an impression into the higher ranked players. Evan Carlson’s return to tournament play after a 10 year break saw him win all of his section play matches and having a plus 6 aggregate. Suprisingly Greg Moreton never won a match and he informed me he did exactly the same in last year’s Barton McGill Open Snooker tournament. Other 4 match winners in section play were Henry Killian, +7, Wyn Belmont +7, Ivan Kendrick +6 and Dave Gourley +5. There was a play off required for 15th and 16th post section positions with Yash Kant, Dennis Yin and Junior, Jeremiah Taite, all equal. Yin and Taite got through as number 15 and 16 respectively. The suprises carried on into post section play with Bruce Davies beating Dale Kwok 3/2, Carlson beating Vinny Gounder 3/1. Louis Chand beating Peter Lesslie 3/0. Quarter-finalist results were, Davies 3, Kendrick 1, Carlson 3, Gourley 1, Killian 3, Chand 1, McBreen 3, Belmont 2. Semi-finals, Killian 3, Carlson 0, McBreen 3, Davies 0. Killian retained his title beating Chris McBreen 3/1. This was the 4th time Killian has won the event. The Plate was won by Ashwin Kumar 2/1 over Jamish Kant. Highest Break of the tournament was Chris McBreen 86.

NZ Billiard players `cueing up for Leeds’
Provincial Billiard Championships have been held around New Zealand with the Qualifying Cueists getting automatic entry into the `Blue Ribbon Event’ , the NZ Billiard Championships to be held at Auckland’s home of CueSports, SnookerWorld on Mt Albert Road at Royal Oak in July this year.
New Zealand’s recognized IBSF Cuesport Coach, Mr Gary Gillard, held in February this year for `Billiard players’, a `Billiard Coaching School’. The benefits of this `special coaching’ was very much appreciated by all Cueists who attended.
Current and 11 times NZ Champion, and Christchurch’s Champion, Gary Oliver has boldly let his Cue do the talking this year when winning two weeks ago with two double century breaks (240-252). Oliver has recently had major shoulder surgery and he will again be the one to beat in July. Others to be going to the NZ Champs from the South Island are past NZ Champion Peter deGroot, Indian born but now a NZ resident Adesh Shekatkar, Peri Lilii, Peter Gormley, George Robertson and the NZBSA President, Mr Alan Parris.
Hawkes Bay Champion cueist and a past NZ Champ, Paul Stocker has booked his entry into this years NZ Champs by winning at the NZ Open Billiards held in Hamilton last September when taking out some English and Australian cueists.
Wellington will have their Champion Derek Gibb (also a past NZ Champion), along with Russell Robinson (a Legend in NZ), Zac Guja, Russ Delahunty, Neil Gyde, Jim Parkin and the very fine cueist at both Snooker and Billiards, Mark Hannah.
Waikato will be represented by their 2013 and 2014 Champion Darren Taylor, multiple Trophy winner Joe Ifa, ever improving Billiard players, Mark Taylor and Kevin Creighton along with two players who are also International Referees, Cliff Hazelton and Dan O’Sullivan whose services will be required at the WORLD BILLIARD CHAMPIONSHIPS to be held at Leeds, UK in October.
At this stage Auckland will be represented by another Billiard Legend, Ron Milicich, along with Bryce Good, Gordon Fletcher, Dennis Yin and the current Auckland Champion Wayne Carey (also a past NZ Billiards Champion)
With `wildcards to come’, SnookerWorld in July will host a fine exhibition of NZ’s talented Billiard players.
Current record highest break in a NZ Billiard Championship belongs to Mr Gary Oliver (Ch/Ch) … 303
There is plenty for NZ’s Cueists to strive for as this years NZ Billiard Titleholder will get automatic entry along with the NZBSA’s next #1 player into the World Championship at Leeds in October.
The NZ Snooker Championships will be held at the same Venue, straight after the Billiards.
